A Streamlined Bathroom

Project Scope

The end result is an updated, modern space that feels like it actually belongs to its owners—and to the year 2023! The white countertops, straight-grain oak cabinetry, and smooth, neutral tiles all work together to create a fresh, calming space.

We can probably all relate to an outdated bathroom in need of an update. This client wanted to upgrade their blah, builder-grade bathroom cabinets and rejuvenate the entire room. They also needed help making their bathroom work for them, which meant getting rid of an oversized, underused whirlpool tub.

An L-Shaped Room

‍ This primary bathroom presented some interesting challenges due to its L-shaped layout. Our designer, Dondi Szombatfalvy , relocated the shower from its dead-end location at one end of the L. Instead, the spa tub was removed to make room for a larger, walk-in shower, which was one of the client’s top priorities. The old shower area became a custom closet space. The area now has a purpose, instead of feeling disconnected from the rest of the bathroom. The new shower feels integrated with the rest of the room, instead of like a lonely afterthought.

Dondi hid visual clutter in the new shower by cleverly hiding the controls and a storage niche behind a wall, which can only be seen from inside the shower itself. Anyone looking in the doorway wouldn’t even know these things existed.Beyond the L-shape itself, this bathroom is all about lines. You can see it in everything from the cabinetry finish, to the tile design in the shower, to the mirrors above the vanity. Everything feels streamlined and modern due to the way these lines interact with each other.

Interesting Features

Because this bathroom renovation was done in a condo unit, the clients couldn’t have the zero-threshold shower they envisioned, since they couldn’t touch the subfloor. Instead, the tile installer created a custom threshold with a slight slope at the entry. The tile installer also hand-cut each piece of tile to ensure all of the grout lines were aligned in the shower—a detail that’s easy to miss, but adds to the sleek feel of the room.

Taking Customization To The Next Level

Project Scope

This client took an already spacious home to the next level by reconfiguring much of the main floor, as well as constructing a two-story addition on their home. They looked to our Lead Sales Designer, Dondi Szombatfalvy, to help them focus on the kitchen. The space was reconfigured to take over the existing living and dining areas and included the addition of a butler’s pantry. With a large extended family and a love of cooking, their core desire was to host seamless and connected gatherings.The kitchen is appointed with cutting-edge appliance technology, ample space for multiple cooks, and all types of entertaining apparatuses. It is the ultimate cook’s and entertainer’s kitchen.This project became complicated when the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the globe. It began pre-pandemic and managed to be completed in the midst of lockdowns and material shortages. The client was isolated in their home even during a major renovation! Some of the project had to be re-considered as materials were delayed or scarce.

The focal point of this kitchen is not one, not two, but three ten-foot islands. These massive islands provide ample space for entertaining, prep, and clean-up. The islands also store items where they will actually be used, such as the third island being used to store dishes that are seasonal or for entertaining.

Great care was taken to seamlessly integrate the appliances into the space. This is especially seen in a wall featuring a six-foot stretch of refrigeration. Not only are the appliances themselves hidden, but they sit flush with the walls, beams, and pantry cabinetry. This required careful coordination between the client, Dondi, and the contractor.

The main prep and cooking area sits perpendicular to a specialized clean-up zone. In the main area, a five-foot Galley WorkStation sits across from a 36-inch induction cooktop and steam oven. Tall storage units frame one of the many large windows of the space and a secondary sink. These cabinets feature specialized doors and roll-out storage for easy access. There are also multiple dishwashers to handle the kind of high-volume entertaining this couple loves to host

Interesting Features

‍ Because of the large windows and multiple islands, no wall cabinets were used in this project. A rarity in kitchen design!

Because of the layout and open views, the fireplace and television can be seen from all areas.The integrated wood ceiling and beam structure help set apart the kitchen from the rest of the wide-open space and helps to frame it separate from the rest of the main floor.

Repurposing The Old Cabinetry

‍The butler’s pantry was designed to repurpose the existing kitchen cabinets. Some panels and moldings were color-matched to the existing cabinetry for flawless installation. The double ovens were relocated to this space since these appliances are used less frequently. A bar sink and faucet are a great addition for easy and convenient cleanup when needed.

Nakoma Neighborhood Remodel

Project Scope

‍We all heard how expensive building materials were during the height of the pandemic. This client learned that lesson firsthand: they had planned to build on a lot they’d owned for years, only to find the costs reaching uncomfortable investment levels.They set their sights on buying an existing home and found one they liked in the Nakoma neighborhood. Since they were no longer building, they decided to put their budget toward remodeling the home to fit their needs and aesthetics. The original space was drab and dated. Much of the home felt closed off and dark. To help make some of those changes, they turned to our designer, Dana Langreck, to help bring their vision to life.

End Result

‍The final result is a bright, cohesive space. The space feels richer and more open than seemed possible before. This home was brought up to current living standards and feels fresh and new, despite having been built in 1951. The natural materials add to the Midcentury Modern feel, while the mix of colors and finishes feel like 2023.

Moving the refrigerator and adding wall ovens utilize a wall that wasn’t being used before. This creates an even more open space and provides more room for counter space. The range was also moved from the island to the back wall which creates a large counter area for entertaining and casual seating.The addition of a bar area to coordinate with the kitchen cabinetry ties the whole space together. The owners have an extensive bar glass collection that has a beautiful home now. The whole space feels elevated with the addition of custom cabinetry.

Interesting Features

Two-toned cabinetry adds interest to the space and helps to brighten it up.In the narrow area by the new porch door, Dana was able to use shallow pantry cabinets to create even more storage. It was an awkward space that would have otherwise been wasted and by not taking them to the ceiling she kept them from feeling too bulky and a decorative space was created.

The 3D nature of the backsplash tile, selected by their interior designer, adds interest and texture to the space and provides a pleasing contrast to the slab cabinet style.At the island, the three stools wrap around one end, creating a more conversational area to eat breakfast or chat over a cup of coffee.We are excited to share this incredible remodel with you.

While design trends don’t perfectly align with the new year—what’s ”in” and what’s “out” doesn’t roll over when the calendar does—it’s still fun to consider what trends we can look forward to in 2023. One of the best things about design right now is that it’s hard to go wrong: so many different design styles, colors, and features are out there. In many ways, it’s easier than ever to truly customize your space to reflect your family and personality.Many of these trends aren’t brand new, but will be more prevalent in 2023. Take a look through the list and see which trends spark your interest. Even if a kitchen remodel isn’t in your plan for 2023, you might still find things to incorporate in your own home.

Dark tones

As much as white has reigned supreme over the past decade or two, black and other dark tones such as indigo and charcoal have had a real impact over the past several years. Expect to see more dark colors, especially in unexpected places, such as on walls and ceilings. As far as kitchens and baths go, black cabinetry will continue to emerge as a trend. Black, especially matte black, will also be used for hardware, lighting, plumbing fixtures, and other accents.

Natural materials

‍Those dark tones pop all the more when mixed with light-colored natural materials. Think dark-toned cabinets above mixed with natural quarter-sawn oak ones. We’ll also see stone countertops, wood (or wood-look) floors, and cement used for everything from tabletops to sinks. What makes these materials 2023 is when they’re mixed together and used in simple ways for organic, yet modern designs.

Color

To echo that natural theme, earth tones are dominant right now, with cool greens and blues and muted desert tones popping up everywhere. We’re also going to see more color in the home generally. This is partly thanks to updated manufacturing processes, since you can now get cabinetry in virtually any color you can dream up. Appliances are also available now in more colors than ever. This is all in reaction to the all-white rooms that reigned supreme throughout much of the 2010s.

Subtle stone countertops

Granite's long reign is over. Homeowners are now embracing other natural stones of all types, with quartz and quartzite at the top of the list. Solid colors or slabs with subtle movement are preferred, while anything with a “speckled” look feels dated.

Islands as Dining Tables

‍Islands are no longer being used only for prep or as secondary seating, but as primary seating in the kitchen, especially for families. Large islands, sometimes with multiple levels of seating are replacing dining tables entirely. This offers a completely integrated, seamless feel to the space, as well as an informal one.

Smart Technology

‍ Less a trend and more a 21st century reality, smart technology is going to continue to be embraced in everything from refrigerators to thermostats to toasters. Clients, especially younger ones, are looking for smartphone connectivity anywhere possible, especially if it helps to reduce energy usage in the home.

Hidden Butler’s Pantries

‍Butler’s pantries, and walk-in pantries generally, are especially popular right now. A hidden butler’s pantry that incorporates a small prep area on top of extra storage is both useful and practical—at least for those who have the space.

Custom Storage

‍ When open kitchens and bathrooms are desired, the need for clever storage solutions are of utmost importance. This is partially fueled by the rise of TikTok and Instagram, and the novelty storage solutions you can find via a quick scroll through these apps. Homeowners want custom storage solutions for everything from their hair accessories to their refrigerators. Many of these storage solutions can be built right in to the cabinets, though almost anything can be added later.

Large showers

Clients are continuing to remodel their primary baths to remove oversized tubs and replace them with large, spa-like, shower areas. The result is the translation of the open-plan concept to the bathroom, with big, open spaces free of walls.

Floating Vanities

‍ To continue that clean, open look, floating vanities—a vanity attached to the wall instead of resting on the floor—will be more prominent. Floating vanities provide a streamlined look with an unbroken floor plan; perfect to show off interesting tile flooring.

Compared to a kitchen remodel, remodeling a bathroom sure feels like a simple endeavor.In many ways, it is. You don’t have to deal with appliances, there are fewer cabinets, and the square footage is typically much smaller than the average kitchen.Still, there are several things at play. There’s more plumbing than a kitchen. You have cabinetry and countertops. There are showers and/or bathtubs. There’s plenty of tile. There are also accessibility and safety concerns related to the ways you move around a bathroom: How accessible is the tub/shower? Are grab bars needed?While a typical bathroom remodel takes anywhere from two to six months—from the first meeting with a designer to project completion—there is a lot of variability within that range. Much of the overall timeline depends on the size of a project, the flexibility of the client’s schedule, and how quickly decisions are made. A small powder room can be fairly simple to complete. A larger primary bathroom, or doing several bathrooms at once, will add to that timeline.Here are some more details about each stage of a bathroom remodel.

Research Phase (Varies)

This part of the process is where you take time to plan and dream. What do you want your new bathroom to be?

Space Planning. You’ll work with your designer to figure out how best to use your space. Sometimes this is simple: cabinets and plumbing are just being replaced, but not moved. Other times walls, plumbing, and cabinetry are moved to create a more functional bathroom space.
Select Finishes. This includes everything from countertops and cabinet color to flooring type and shower tile.
Finalize Plans. Once everything has been selected, your designer will finalize your bathroom plans so you can sign off on the design and finishes. Your first down payment will also be due at this time.
Order Products. After making your down payment, your designer will order everything for your project, from cabinetry to cabinet knobs. Plumbing fixtures will also need to be ordered at this time, as well as any products or installation materials being provided by the contractor.

Demo Phase (A few days-3 weeks)

‍The most dreaded part: your house is under construction! If only minor changes are happening, this part can move quickly. More extensive projects will take more time.

Window coverings can be easy to ignore in the summer. Sure, we might need to block out the sun sometimes, but more often we’re throwing open our windows and embracing the joy of natural light. We know all too well how early the sun will be setting in the winter months! And now that the days are getting shorter, we’re drawing our shades earlier to gain some privacy.You might start to notice the window coverings that don’t work as well in your home, the ones that let in more light than you’d like or don’t provide the privacy you need. You might even notice the spots that lack a window treatment at all: that random window in a closet or the patio door that stumped you.We’re happy to partner with Graber Blinds to provide our clients many options for their window treatment needs. One of the most popular options Graber provides is cellular shades. Cellular shades cover a range of design styles. They are also inconspicuous enough to fade into the background of a room or be layered with other window treatments like curtains.Here is a basic overview on all things cellular shade:

Energy Efficient

Cellular shades are the most energy efficient standard window coverings on the market. The cells trap air which essentially works as another layer of insulation for your home - particularly useful on large windows (and our Midwestern winters!). Less heat loss equals lower energy bills and cozier rooms.

‍Light and Privacy

‍ There are several options for light and privacy levels with cellular shades.

Allows the most sunlight to filter through. Perfect for rooms without privacy concerns.
Semi-sheer. Semi-sheer shades still let in a lot of light and offer a little more privacy.
Light-filtering. These let a little light through and also provide more privacy. Light-filtering shades are great for main rooms that face the street or bedrooms that face secluded areas.
As the name suggests, these shades block all light and provide total privacy when closed. Best for bathrooms and bedrooms that get morning sun and/or face public areas.

Controls

‍As with light and privacy, there are several control options for cellular shades.

Cord lift and continuous-loop lift . These options use cords to control the shade. Cords can be beneficial for very large or tall shades.
Cordless lift. The most popular option (no cords!). Cordless operates by lifting up and down on the bottom rail. It offers a clean look and is a particularly safe option for homes with kids and/or pets.
Works via a remote or app. Great for those who are looking for more smart home solutions and for out-of-reach windows.

Configurations

Cellular shades are also endlessly adaptable for each room’s lighting needs.

Standard is what comes to mind when you think of a shade: it mounts to the top of the window and opens from the bottom.
Top down. The shade opens from the top instead of the bottom.
Bottom-up/Top-down . This popular configuration allows you to open the shade from both the top and the bottom to let in light as needed.
Sun up/Sun down. This shade style pairs a sheer fabric at the top portion of the window with a more opaque fabric for the rest. Great for letting in light but also allowing privacy.
Perfect Vue. This option is similar to Sun up/Sun down, but can be created with different fabrics, not just the cellular shade ones.
Slide Vue. This option turns the cellular pleats so they operate vertically, which works well for sliding doors or wide windows.

Cohesive Design

‍Cellular shades are adaptable for unique window shapes and configurations. Arched windows can be easily accommodated, as can wide windows - up to 192 inches! And with the Slide Vue configuration described above, Graber’s cellular shades can even be used on sliding and patio doors. Placing the laundry area where everyone actually lives helps streamline this never-ending chore.Maybe you’re tired of the inefficiencies in this area of your home. But where do you start when thinking about remodeling your own laundry room? Here at Bella Domicile, we have some ideas on how to make your laundry room work better for your life.

Appliances

‍ Picking out a washer and dryer sets the tone for the space plan of the room, since these appliances are the least flexible aspect of the space. Determine what type of appliances you’d like: a standard washer and dryer, a set raised on pedestals, or a stacked configuration. Dry Away System One of our favorite laundry room additions is the Dry Away System . Dry Away is a series of vertical hanging racks that can be pulled out as needed and otherwise stay stashed away inside custom cabinetry. These racks are a discreet way to dry delicate clothing as well as towels, swimsuits, and other sports gear. Or use them for regular loads of laundry to save on energy consumption and costs that would otherwise be spent using a dryer. Dry Away is also perfect for smaller spaces, as it’s able to dry multiple articles of clothing in a fraction of the space of a single hanging rod.

‍Cabinets and Organization

‍Like most rooms, a laundry area functions best when it is open and uncluttered. It’s a space where people go in and out frequently, often with their arms full of towels or bulky baskets. The clearer the space is, the easier and safer it is to use. Cabinets and shelving also help stash away everything from ironing boards to hampers and laundry detergent to miscellaneous cleaning supplies.

Folding Area

A folding area helps keep all the laundry tasks in one spot. If you’re using a front-loading washer and dryer, a counter area above the appliances is one way to make room for a folding area, even in a small space. A larger laundry room might have room for a separate counter space. A folding area can sometimes double as a spot for ironing, depending on its size and material.

‍Utility Sink

‍ The laundry room is a perfect spot for a deep, single-bowl utility sink. These all-purpose sinks can be used for soaking away stains and filling or emptying utility buckets. Sometimes a utility sink is used to bathe small pets—or rinse off muddy-footed children!—as an alternative to the bathtub or other sinks in the home. Who among us hasn’t spent time wishing they were more organized? As much as we’ve been able to digitize (bye-bye paper bills and stacks of photos), our homes still have plenty of items to sort through and store, from winter gear to snacks to shoes. The popularity of organizational systems like The Home Edit and Marie Kondo has exploded. (And don’t get me started on TikTok’s restock videos!) This has only been exacerbated by all the time we’ve spent in our homes over the past few years.But actually getting organized is a job in and of itself. Especially if your current storage spaces aren’t working for you. It’s hard for your child to keep their closet organized when they can’t even reach the hangers. A bedroom closet full of nothing but hanging space isn’t helpful when you’ve got a collection of delicate sweaters. And it’s hard for shoes to stay organized very long when the mudroom doesn’t have enough cubbies for everyone in the family.At Bella Domicile, we use the Stor-X system to help our clients organize their lives. ‍ Most homes come with a fairly standard closet set-up: a rod suspended underneath a single shelf. Our clients always have a lot of questions about the remodeling process, especially at the beginning. These range from the practical—How do I live without a kitchen? —to the subjective—Do these colors go together?Our designers want the entire process to be as comfortable as possible. We’ll take the time to answer your questions, address your fears, and look forward to the joy of a new space with you! Of course, not all designers are the same. Remodeling a kitchen is arguably the most significant project you can take on in your home. Even without major layout changes, you’re dealing with cabinetry, countertops, flooring, tile, electrical work, plumbing, paint, and appliances. This involves coordination with a designer, project manager, general contractor, and subcontractors, not to mention your own schedule.Phew. It’s tempting to throw in the towel before you’ve even begun.Coordinating all those moving parts and pieces can be overwhelming. That’s why we’re here. Our entire job is to help streamline the process and make it manageable for everyone involved. Interested in getting started? Here are 7 things to know before tackling a kitchen remodel.

1. Bring in the Professionals.

Few people have the time and skill sets necessary to take on an entire kitchen themselves. Most people will hire out some, if not all, of the work. What makes sense for you? Some people are comfortable with and have the time to manage the project independently, hiring contractors and coordinating schedules. Many people want the expertise of a kitchen designer to help bring their project to life. And most people need help streamlining the process. Kitchen remodels are not everyday events in most people’s lives!But they are in ours. Here at Bella Domicile, you’ll work with one of our designers who not only creates the kitchen of your dreams, but also helps coordinate contractors, material delivery and installation, and scheduling. Our clients are kept in the loop without the stress of managing the entire project on their own.

2. Determine Your Budget.

Your budget, more than anything else, will determine the scope of your project. A general rule of thumb is to invest 10% of your home’s value in a kitchen remodel, though of course, every project varies. Plan for some wiggle room for unexpected issues that come up during the remodeling process (It happens!) and extras you may not have planned for initially. Your budget is one of the best tools your designers and contractors have to help you efficiently plan a remodel, so they can work with you to find the best and most efficient use of those dollars.

3. Prioritize.

Making a priority list is one of the best ways to focus your budget. Cabinetry is usually a top priority for our clients because it’s a significant part of the cost and not easy to change. Appliances on the other hand, are relatively easy to replace and can be carried over from an existing kitchen to a new project. Other people want new appliances immediately and save money on tile or flooring. What’s important to you?

4. Do Your Research.

Putting together a Pinterest board or Houzz ideabook is a great way to figure out your design preferences. In addition to aesthetics, it’s important to research the type of materials and appliances you’re putting in your home. Getting into the nitty-gritty of cabinet construction, countertop types,appliances, and flooring can feel like learning a half-dozen new languages all at once! Trade professionals and a design consultant can help with this process.Another thing to research? Yourself! How do you store your plates, pots, spices, utensils, and other items now? How would you like to store them? Observe yourself as you move about your existing kitchen for a week and take notes on how you use the space. Chances are there are changes that could be made in your remodel to make your life easier.

5. This Is A Commitment.

Unfortunately, real-life remodels are not a 30-minute HGTV spot. The average kitchen remodel—from your very first planning meeting to project completion—takes 3-6 months. Your kitchen could be torn up for anywhere from 4 weeks (for less involved projects) to 4 months or more (for major remodels).How long this takes partially depends on clients: how long does it take to make decisions? Is there a specific target date for completion? Other things, such as cabinetry lead times, are only in the hands of the manufacturers. Inflexible dates, such as hosting a graduation party or holiday, can be your worst enemy if not given enough time.

6. Living Without a Kitchen is Annoying.

That 4 weeks to 4 months time frame above? You’ll largely be without a kitchen. Some people set up appliances like a refrigerator and microwave somewhere temporary, such as a mudroom or garage. Some commit to washing dishes in the bathtub or using disposable dinnerware for the duration. There’s just no way around it: living without a functioning kitchen is a major inconvenience. It’s an important thing to consider when figuring out your timeline. And maybe throw some extra money in the budget for takeout.

7. Remember This is Your Home.

This is your home. Not that influencers on Instagram. Not Joanna Gaines’. Not the fancy one you saw in Architectural Digest. Design trends and inspiration only go so far. You may want that white, neutral kitchen you’ve been seeing splashed all over social media. Then again, maybe you have a house full of small children, meaning anything white is not your best friend right now.The most important thing of all is that your home should reflect you. A family who cooks at home only a few nights a week probably doesn’t need the highest-end range. Most people can do without a formal dining room. Streamline Your Home Work Environment

We’ve entered a period where the work place seems to be shifting faster than ever. Remote work is no longer a novelty but many people’s lived reality. According to a recent Gallop poll , two-thirds of white-collar employees work from home either some or all of the time. The vast majority of those workers—91%—would like to continue working from home at least some of the time. Working from home has become the new normal in many workplace cultures, as the pandemic forced companies to see it could be done effectively. Flexibility is now key, in terms of hours, workspace, and childcare arrangements.We’re long past the early days of the pandemic, when workplaces shut down and employees scrambled to work from kitchen tables or bedroom closets. People have gone from cobbled-together solutions to seeking more sustainable work spaces in their homes. So how do you go about setting up your own permanent home office solution? Here at Bella Domicile, we have some ideas on how to set up and streamline your own home work environment.

Survey Your Existing Space

‍ The most crucial step is deciding where to set up your permanent office space. Does your home already have a dedicated office? Is there a guest bedroom or other space that can serve multiple functions? Or will you be carving out space in the kitchen, basement, or a closet? Determining what space you have to work with sets up your next steps. A larger, dedicated office space has more room for built in shelving, drawers, and desk space. Other spaces, like an existing kitchen, might be better suited to adding an additional countertop and floating shelves for more flexible desk space and storage. Priorities What are you looking for in an office space? There are non-negotiable needs, like space for a laptop, monitor, keyboard, printer, wiring solutions, etc. But there are also wants, such as natural lighting, a decorative wall for virtual meeting backgrounds, and space for artwork. Would you like to look out a window or is that a distraction? Do you place a premium on storage or is a desk with a single drawer sufficient? Survey the way you work in your existing space for a few days and take notes on things you particularly like or get frustrated with. Everyone’s perfect office space is different; create a list of your own wants and needs to best lay out a work space for you.

‍Desk Space

The amount of physical desk space will primarily depend on the size of your work environment. At a minimum, you should plan on a desk area that is 48-inches wide and 24-inches deep. If you’re exclusively working from home and have the space, a larger desk area could be helpful. Also take your actual work into consideration. Maybe you’re in a creative field and are always looking for open desk space to sketch or layout ideas. Maybe your desk is more of a landing space and a smaller surface area is sufficient.

Storage

The amount of needed storage will also vary from person to person. Consider the type of storage you may need: file storage, drawers, bookshelves. File drawers full of papers can be digitized, freeing up floor space. Maybe you reference books often and need plenty of open shelving. If you frequently use a printer, dedicated storage for copy paper, ink, and the printer itself could make sense.

‍Flexible Use

‍ For many people, a home office is a flexible space. Both partners might work from home and the space needs to work for both of them. Maybe the office space also functions as a children’s playroom, and needs storage that is flexible for both work and children’s play. The “office” might be a single counter in a kitchen, which also needs to function as a homework area for school-aged children.If we’ve learned anything during the past couple of years, it’s to be adaptable. Water: The New Gold

We take it for granted. We walk into the kitchen, turn on the faucet, and water flows from the spout without giving it any thought. It's so automatic that we fill a glass and drink it without regard to the water source or the quality of the product.It's essential to stay hydrated; it is crucial for health and well-being. Since the human body is made up of about 60% water, that water needs replenishing continually.As a kid growing up in Madison, drinking water was never a concern or a topic worth discussing. The water we drank came from a reliable source – Madison's famous artesian wells. The water from these wells flows from underground aquifers, filtered through a natural process involving pressure and miles of rock and sand.While the source and extraction methods are the same as in the past, the quality and purity have changed.

Yes, all of Madison's wells meet or exceed all federal and state standards for health and safety. However, there is growing evidence that something more is going on behind the scenes. In 2019, Madison's water utility discovered the toxic chemical PFAS contaminating up to 14 of the 23 wells in the city.The concern for drinking water extends beyond Madison's border. The Wisconsin State Journal reported the following in 2019: "The first systematic study of well water in southwest Wisconsin found bacterial and chemical contamination at rates as bad as — and possibly worse than — areas targeted by new state water protection rules.Some 42 percent of 301 randomly selected wells tested in Iowa, Grant, and Lafayette counties exceed federal health standards for bacteria that can come from animal or human waste, or for a toxic fertilizer residue."

‍How do we know something clear and odorless is safe for our bodies?

‍ According to a recent article published in The Guardian, tap water's health qualities vs. bottled water are negligible.

The article writes:"Both tap and bottled water are required to meet quality requirements set by the EPA and FDA, respectively. Contamination is always possible in either – and is an urgent issue affecting tap water in parts of the US – but both are generally fine to drink by prevailing standards.Prevailing standards, however, have not quite caught up to the threat of PFAS – a group of industrial chemicals numbering in the thousands and used in a variety of consumer products. PFAS have been found in both tap and bottled water. There is currently no federal guidance on PFAS regulation. However, there is evidence that the most-studied forms of PFAS are carcinogenic and linked to liver damage, thyroid disease, and pregnancy risks, among other adverse health effects." As a kid, I have fond memories of an Ice Cream Truck canvasing through my neighborhood, looking for customers, namely kids and the money provided by the parents.

You probably know the truck I'm talking about; white paneled with a service counter window and an outdoor speaker blaring music announcing the arrival of some cool summertime treats—all with the intent to lure young kids in to purchase an ice cream delight.

Hearing the bells ringing and the music howling on a hot summer night was the signal that cool treats awaited. The sound of ice cream on wheels, heard even indoors, disrupted more than one family dinner. Kids would leap up out from the table, grab some loose change and dart out the door. Flying out the door, it was a foot race to reach the source of the music before the truck was gone.

Fond memories indeed, a relic of the past? Slow down, not so fast.

For many years, the team at Bella Domicile has supported and volunteered at many community events. From swinging a hammer or paintbrush for Habitat for Humanity to stocking shelves at local food pantries. Giving back means volunteering at the Madison Reading Project, mentoring young people, or assisting upstart entrepreneurs. All areas we firmly believe in and support.

So, with the ice cream dream formally proposed, we accepted. This new venture, Momma Meg's by Megan and Christopher Westphal, is designed to be more events-driven. A vision of creating a safe and enjoyable space for families to congregate and partake in one of the sweet tastes of summer – ice cream.

Having survived a Pandemic, isn't this Just what the doctor ordered? A great excuse to congregate around an Ice cream truck of yesterday and share a cool treat. I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream.

The request fits perfectly into one of our initiatives at Bella Domicile – giving back to the community and those who serve it.

We were recently approached by a local entrepreneur couple interested in resurrecting the glory days of the mobile ice cream truck. Would we be willing to participate in re-creating the experiences for a new generation to enjoy by providing parking space for the vehicle? And provide warehouse space for a freezer? How about a dock for vendor deliveries?

Working From Home

When I first saw the acronym WFM in a trade journal, my eyes initially saw a different set of letters. I was astonished this magazine would even consider publishing such as acronym. Are you smiling or just sneering at this post? However, a second look revealed with more clarity the correct letters, and I subsequently learned to my relief what those initials meant – Working from Home .

The pandemic created an overnight demand for working from home. Suddenly everyone, students, teachers, administrators, employees, and their managers needed to learn on the fly how to accomplish the same tasks performed at work from home. And to maintain the same amount of productivity. A tall order while keeping everyone safe and the COVID-19 virus at bay.We all thought this WFH phenomenon would be temporary. Yet, here we are almost a year later, and even though the vaccines are being distributed and the cases of the virus are tracking downward, we may be entering a new normal that still includes, to some degree, working from home.At Bella Domicile, working from home was already in place for some designers before the pandemic's arrival. Others on the team needed to adjust reasonably quickly by setting up makeshift office space and transporting equipment and supplies from their offices to their homes.We learned a few lessons along the way; not everyone is wired to work from home, and not every task can be accomplished away from the office. It requires proper planning and execution to do it properly. And, the more hats a person wears, the harder it is to separate all functions, roles, and responsibilities when working from home.A successful working from home environment requires a certain amount of discipline, planning, and dedication to making it work. Tips for Working from Home

Dedicate the Space: A home office situated in the crossroads and crosshairs of family activities is a recipe for disaster. Designate a quiet space for setting up a distraction-free zone. A spare bedroom, large closet, lower level alcove, or little-used dining rooms are potential candidates for establishing a home office.
Use Airplane Mode: Limit distractions by placing all your devices in airplane mode. And resist turning them on when working on a task. Sneak a peek at emails or text messages during breaks or after eating a meal.
Two is Better than One: Three is even better. If you have space, position at least two monitors on your work desk. Studies have proven that efficiencies are gained when working off multiple monitors. If your primary device is a laptop, larger monitors provide an easier-to-see screen to maneuver.
Adopt the Pomodoro Technique: The Pomodoro Technique is a time management tool that breaks down tasks into manageable intervals with breaks built into each segment. Its simple interface achieves results by reducing distractions, increasing output, and getting things done quickly.

The pandemic created an opportunity for new skills learned or honing existing skills. The WFH phenomenon is likely to stay. The key for many is adjusting and embracing the concept while positioning the space for maximum productivity and success.

Go Take a Bath

Growing up in Wisconsin Saturday nights was bath night. It was the one time during the week I was required to sit in a bathtub and get clean. Saturday was the designated night because my parents did not want some dirty kid stinking up the church on Sunday morning. It didn’t matter for the rest of the week; on Sunday, smelling like a rose did.I don’t have a lot of memories of sitting in that tub. Perhaps once a week didn’t provide enough tape for the memory banks. I do recall when I reached a certain age, the shower was my preferred choice for a wash station, not the tub. Maybe the allure was the speed a shower provides. I can be clean, dried off, dressed, and out the door playing again when it takes to fill a vessel with water. As an adult, I can count on one hand, the times I’ve used a bath since childhood. Most action in a tub occurred with my kids or, more recently, bathing my grandchildren. Has the tub been relegated to the archives and treasured as an iconic symbol of days gone bye? Do the risks outweigh the advantages? It can be challenging for aging baby boomers to climb in and out of a tub. Ditto for young children, not to mention the back strain on the children’s parents.

Are Bathtubs Even Necessary in Homes Today?

In the master bath today, many of the large jetted whirlpool tubs popular in the ’80s and ’90s are being replaced with spacious deluxe showers. Many are large enough to accommodate two people with multiple showerheads and body sprays. Where does the tub stand in this discussion? Interestingly, a third-party market research firm found in a study commissioned by a leading plumbing manufacturer that 38 percent of U.S. residents bath weekly, and half of them are men . So, instead of casting the tub aside with space reserved in a museum, we should rethink the classic bathtub’s role. Most realtors believe one tub, whether free-standing or a tub/shower combination, belongs somewhere in the home, but not necessarily in the master bath. The bathtub falls into the dining room discussion – is a dining room essential? You may not use it every day, or at all, however, it will increase the value of the home and increase of odds of selling your home for a premium.So, take the upright plunge and pursue the pleasure of a spacious, well-laid-out shower. For in today’s market, the bathroom shower reigns supreme, and the bigger, the better. The tub, however, still deserves some attention and our love.

Lessons From a Pandemic

COVID-19 has been a disruptive force – in everyone’s lives. No one left untouched. Lives changed overnight from the sheer speed of this pandemic. Catching everyone off guard and unprepared.Our daily rhythm took a severe hit, altering how we socialize, dine, exercise, work, study, and worship. Adjustments, in some cases, were required on the fly without any manual for reference. A new normal, created overnight.Being grounded added more stress and increased roles and responsibilities for everyone, requiring new skills. Parents, thrust into the role of a substitute teacher for children sent home from their schools. To quickly learn how to instruct while juggling the demands of their other roles. Adult children were shutout from care facilities and unable to visit their aging parents. Trusting their parents was healthy, safe, and receiving all the necessary care without first-hand knowledge.

Many in the workforce needed to adjust to meetings held remotely and learn the nuances of working from home and still be productive. While also learning how to handle isolation and social distancing effectively. Amid this pandemic, it would be a waste if we didn’t reflect on lessons learned from this experience and the new possibilities. Discoveries Has the pandemic opened your eyes to your surroundings? Given you a better appreciation? I’ve heard about a newfound appreciation for family and the need to live in a community. Humans should not live life alone, separated from relational interaction are some of the conversations I’ve heard. What discoveries has this crisis brought to light for you? Take the time to ponder the question. In a spirit of transparency, here is my partial list.

Discovered what fear does to the human spirit
Isolation is not healthy and learned how I respond to adversity.
I’ve learned to appreciate my family more.

And, since I’m cooking more, preparing more meals – three times a day or more, I discovered how inadequate my kitchen is. Frankly, I don’t like it. That’s quite an admission for someone in the industry dedicated to providing well laid out functional and inspiring spaces for homeowners is a career. I don’t have enough countertop space; it’s crowded when more than one person is in the area. And, I hate my lazy susan. Perhaps you can identify with my discovery. Funny what comes to light when we are grounded in our sanctuary.

Possibilities

Rising from this crisis, what are the possibilities for you? Without a keen vision and spending time at the moment, we might otherwise miss some excellent options. Opportunities that might not be available without this pandemic. Think about it. In your current situation are new opportunities available for you to pursue, to seize? That perhaps seemed so distant and impossible to achieve at the start of this year. We have a ripe opportunity to forget or cast aside the problems of today and pursue tomorrow’s possibilities. While thanking a virus for such fertile plantings may seem odd, could it be possible that this pandemic might be a seedbed for personal and professional growth? Or, perhaps even a new kitchen? Perhaps now would be an excellent time to find some quiet space, reflect and write down your possibilities. Again, in a spirit of transparency, here are mine:

Write a book
Learn several new skills
Plan for a new kitchen

More than possibilities, I have taken the next steps to turn many of these items into realities. During a recent Zoom meeting, our kitchen’s dimensions and photos were provided to one of our gifted designers. This remote meeting set the stage for taking discovery and turning it into more than a possibility. From that remote meeting, the designer can start the design process immediately. Isolated, grounded, and stuck due to a virus can be debilitating. It can also be liberating, providing precious time we didn’t have before to reflect, learn, and plan. To plan and pursue new possibilities, even a new kitchen (or bath).

A Safe(r) Product

My hands are tired of being washed. The sound of running water makes them twitch. Raw and chapped they yearn for the old days when washing while necessary, was far less frequent. Oh, hand lotion how I long for ye, come to me and ease my pain.How did we arrive at the point? Where the new normal is a bottle of hand sanitizer in every room, purse, and glove box. Oh yeah, a little virus called COVID-19 is the culprit. It’s all around us, impacting every element of life, and disrupting our rhythm, our routines. We’ve learned more about social distancing, frequent washing of hands, and proper mask etiquette than we care to know. Our homes are the haven from this villain. And, within our homes, we should be able to function without living in fear.

The cliché the kitchen is the heart of the home , while a bit tired seems more appropriate than ever amid this pandemic. And, if the kitchen is the heart, we ought to be able to function in it without fear and worry about a virus attack. We deserve to be free to be creative, socialize, and feed and care for our families. COVID-19 has reintroduced us to our kitchens. The Safer at Home initiatives has forced us to familiarize ourselves once again to this space – the kitchen. We are prepping and cooking more than ever before. And, additional cleaning up has added to the tasks.

One product in the market that provides an extra layer of protection while working in the kitchen is quartz countertops. Its non-porous surface eliminates the need for sealing or providing other types of treatment. Quartz countertops make it difficult for bacteria, mold, and mildew to grow. A non-porous surface is also highly resistant to staining caused by many conventional everyday products. One specific brand, Silestone, has a trademarked (Microban) antimicrobial product mixed into their quartz countertops. Baked right into the product makes it a superior agent warding off unchecked bacteria that may be lurking in your kitchen. Full integration into the material protects the entire life of the product. According to the Microban website, the “antimicrobial product protection works to minimize damaging microbial growth on the surface of products, ensuring they remain cleaner and fresher between cleanings. The technologies also help to reduce the risk of premature product degradation.”Microban incorporated into a host of other household products, i.e., high-pressure laminate surfaces, appliances, plumbing products, and some fabrics, addresses the safety concerns we have. Be Like Keith

Last week several members of our team traveled to Baraboo to attend the memorial service for a teammate struck down by cancer. Keith Nechvatal served the clients of Bella Domicile for over thirty years, installing cabinets, countertops and performing a variety of other specialized craftsman duties. He was a co-worker that everyone loved and aspired to beWe learned at the memorial service that Keith grew up on a farm in Iowa-Grant County and was an all-star athlete in High School. The skills he learned that carried him throughout life were more than likely honed on that farm. And, the team approach that benefited him and we at Bella Domicile are rooted in those early days of school. Keith was quiet, locked in, and engaged. Friendly, but not overbearing. He was the neighbor down the street that would cancel his plans for the weekend to spend time with you building a deck or installing a swing set for your kids.

“Will it be Keith?” was a question often asked when scheduling an appointment with a client. Keith was in high demand, which was a delight for management, but a challenge in managing the other installers.Clients loved him and loved the level of service and respect he showed to every homeowner, builder, or remodeling contractor. Although he had plenty of reasons to, he never complained. It was that “Git’er Done” mentality that attracted many to him.Three words sum up Keith’s character: Care. Love. Kindness . Three simple words that personified who he was, how he showed up every day, and the indelible imprint he left on those around him.

Care: In a world that is all me, me, me, centric, Keith was more focused on those around him. He might have been the role model to which Noah Webster used to define the word. Instead of trying to articulate it, Keith would choose just to live it. Concern and care for others was his motto, and boy did he deliver. Need help on a project? His response would be, “I’ll be right over.” Have an urgent need that can’t wait until tomorrow? A typical response we’d hear in the office was, “I’ll stop what I’m doing and make it happen.” Caring for others was an everyday event for him.

‍ Love: Keith loved his family. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren. The stories he told and the photos he shared provided evidence of what love is. Keith would often end his shift to visit, help out, or simply look forward to playing with his grandchildren. Love is a two-way street, and the outpouring of it at his memorial service served as a reminder of how much others loved him.

‍ Kindness: Regardless of the circumstance, Keith was kind. Perhaps, it dovetailed nicely into the caring attribute he possessed. Keith was helpful to everyone. He never let his opinions of others impact or reflect how he responded to any situation. His kindness rubbed off in many ways. He was reliving stress, easing tension, and picking someone up when kicked down—even creating introspection of those around him. Keith was kind to everyone.While saddened that he is gone, we rejoice in knowing him, his legacy, and the impact he had on our world. And, the character traits we should aspire to be – more like Keith.If he were here today, I’m confident he’d end this post with his trademark, “Judas Priest,” I had a great life!

Word of the Year

“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning.” Maya Angelou We’ve started a tradition here at Bella Domicile to kick off the new year. This year, for the second year in a row, we’ve asked each staff member to pick a word to set the tone for the next twelve months. If you scroll through social media, you’ll find this idea has been growing in popularity in recent years — just look for the proliferation of posts tagged with #oneword. It makes sense. The idea of using a word to focus on for the year can actually be more tangible — and much more practical — than a list of resolutions. And unlike a resolution, which is so often tied to one area of life: “drink more water”, “eat more vegetables”, “answer emails in a timely manner”, etc. a single word can encapsulate several aspects of life, all rolled into one simple word. For example, a word like focus can capture each of the resolutions I listed above.

You can focus on drinking more water, which might include something like purchasing a new water bottle. You can focus on eating more vegetables by being more intentional with meal planning and what sides you order at a restaurant. And you can focus on answering emails, by setting aside a dedicated time each day to tackle your inbox. A good word helps to direct your attention in multiple areas of your life. In fact, a good word is flexible and can grow with you throughout the year. But how to pick a word? You can find entire lists of these “words of the year ”through a quick Google search. Yet a list of 100 (or many, many more!) is overwhelming. Here are a few tips that helped our staff choose their own words for the year.

Be yourself.

‍ Think about both who you are and who you want to become. You can even make a list to describe that person. What words would you use to describe them?

‍Be authentic.

Using an online resource to find a word can be helpful, as long as you keep in mind that this word should resonate and call to you in some way. It can be anything you want it to be. All that matters is that it has some sort of personal meaning that works as a reminder for you throughout the year.

Be honest.

‍ Some people describe having a love/hate relationship with their word. That’s okay. Your word should push and challenge you. Your word and the goals associated with it should also reflect your own season of life. There’s a saying in yoga: “stay on your own mat”. It means to focus on yourself and not on what the people around you are doing. Don’t worry about what others have accomplished or what words they have picked. Stay in tune with your own journey.

Be decisive.

‍ In the end, you do need to choose a word! There’s no right or wrong answer. Some people find it helpful to combine words or find a phrase to help them throughout the year. That’s okay, too! No one is being graded here. Make a list, mull it over, and then pick the word that calls to you.

Be flexible.

‍ It’s just a word. And you will screw up. You’ll order French fries instead of broccoli or push off those emails for days or chug coffee instead of water to get through the day until dinnertime. Oh well. That means you’re human. The beauty of choosing a word is that it’s right there to guide you the next time you’re ready for it, whether that’s in an hour, or tomorrow, or even next month. A few women from the Bella team have been kind enough to share their own words for 2020. Our hope is that these words guide us both within and outside of our workplace. These words will help us work better with our clients, our co-workers, within our own families, and even with ourselves. We hope you join us with your own words for 2020, too! Tasha’s word of the year is self . “That word references different aspects of my life that I would like to focus on, starting now. Self-love, self-awareness, self-discipline. Prioritizing my wants and needs and investing in me as I continue down the path towards my best self.” Tara’s word is simplify. “In order to create the balance I need in my life, I need to Simplify. To achieve this, I need to declutter not only my physical space but also rid myself of toxic people and things. I only want to keep things in my life that bring me the greatest joy and meaning. Which in turn leads to less stress, anxiety and creates a more positive work/life balance.” Abbey’s word is do. “I find there are times in my life that if I would have done something right away it would have caused less issues or stress for me. Party-Friendly Kitchen Design

It’s December, which means it’s the time of year when people are hosting gatherings in their homes more than any other. Holidays and other celebrations pile on top of one another into a whirlwind of hosting, entertaining, and general party chaos. And the kitchen is one of the main spaces for these gatherings.Beyond being a place for food prep and clean-up, the kitchen is often the social hub of any gathering. Where better to socialize than the spot where the drinks are poured and the food comes out piping hot? Below we’ve outlined some ways for your kitchen to become a functional, beautiful space to entertain in - whether you’re looking for ways to best utilize your current space or are planning for an entire remodel.

‍Consider the workflow of the space

‍ When there are lots of people in your kitchen - no matter the size - it can become cramped and interrupt your typical workflow. Think about your own needs as the host and what you need to happen for the gathering to go smoothly. Arranging food, drinks, plates, etc. out of the main prep zone (often the refrigerator/stove/sink triangle) will make both food preparation and clean up smoother. Consider setting garbage bins out if somewhere accessible - especially if they typically sit inside a cabinet. The more you can move out of your own work zone, the better.

And consider the flow of the gathering

‍Think about how you want the space to be used. Different choices can have their own trade-offs: i.e. setting out the food and drinks on the island could mean that no one can sit there. If you need those seats, where else can you set out food? Having a separate bar/drink area has the advantage of breaking up where people congregate. It helps break up the flow of the space since there are less people in one spot at the same time. It also helps to arrange the food in a way that doesn’t back up foot traffic. Can people circle around the island or a table? Avoid tight corners and dead-ends if at all possible.

Open up your space

‍ An open plan space - where the kitchen/dining room opens up directly to other living areas - is the most advantageous layout for hosting. It’s easy to see what everyone is doing and have a conversation, even across a room. If that’s not your reality, add seating and set out food in adjacent spaces. Also consider removing items that could add clutter to the party space: large toys, storage bins, etc. can be temporarily moved to another room to open up the party area.

Think about fun yet functional additions

‍ If you are working on or considering a remodel - especially if you’re a frequent entertainer - there are some extras that can be convenient to have built in to your kitchen. A warming drawer is nice to free up oven space. A separate ice machine, beverage refrigerator, and/or specialty espresso machine can be wonderful additions in a wet bar made for entertaining. Our favorite hosting workhorse of all is the Galley Workstation . While it certainly increases the everyday functionality of a kitchen, entertaining is where it really shines. It can be used for everything from food prep to food serving to a spot to keep beverages iced down and cool.

Of course, any kitchen is a hosting kitchen. You don’t need the latest gadgets or a full remodel to host and enjoy having people in your home. Your guests aren’t looking for a picture-perfect space, either. Even the most well-designed kitchen will end up with bags and wrappers strewn on the counters, empty cans and bottles by the sink, and a pile of dirty dishes by the end of the night. Design for a Difference 2019

2019 marks the fifth year Bella Domicile has been involved with the Madison chapter of Design for a Difference. The International Design Guild founded the Design for a Difference program to create a partnership between socially-conscious showrooms and their communities, through embracing and supporting local nonprofit organizations. Evidence-based interior design has continually been proven to improve people’s quality of life. The focus of Design for a Difference is to bring these interior design principles to often overlooked spaces in the community to help them prosper and serve their neighborhoods more effectively. We partner with the head of our local Madison chapter, Floor 360 , to tackle these projects each year.This year’s recipient was the Wil Mar Neighborhood Center located in the Williamson-Marquette neighborhood. The center describes itself as “a place for all people to learn, grow, and celebrate”. Wil Mar was established in 1968 and serves more than 15,000 individuals through its programming each year. They provide a variety of services to East Isthmus residents, including a variety of fitness classes for all ages, after school and summer care for children aged 5-12, weekly food pantries, community meals, and a variety of summer festivals.The Wil Mar Neighborhood Center exists in a space that was a church for over 50 years before being donated to the community for its current purpose. This 8500 square foot, over 100 year old building was in need of updates, more functional space, and cohesive aesthetics. Wil Mar’s existing spaces were a hodge-podge of colors, furniture, and artwork. Some spaces were colorful but cluttered, others were bland and sterile. Eleven rooms in total were redesigned this year, including the kitchen, the youth room, and the Yahara room, the biggest space in the center which can be rented for events.Our team at Bella Domicile was in charge of tackling the Yahara Kitchen space. The commercial kitchen was small and about to get smaller during the remodel process. Our goal was to make the entire space appear larger than it actually is, while also improving its functionality. The existing kitchen was one that was heavy on the sterile, industrial side. The bland colors did nothing to reflect the vibrancy of the center itself.

The kitchen itself is vital to many of Wil Mar’s outreach programs such as putting out the weekly community meal; we saw just how important it was to the Wil Mar Neighborhood Center to bring people together over food.Over the course of several weeks, our team worked to upgrade the cabinets and countertops, add backsplash tile to the space, painted the walls, added new shelving to the pantry, and gave the existing appliances a good cleaning. While we were unable to move any of the appliances, the space got a good cleaning, brightening, and overall update it desperately needed. We’re grateful to our vendor Bellmont Cabinet Co ., who donated all of the cabinetry, our local partner The Granite Shop of Madison who donated all of the countertops, and to our own Lori Leistico who designed the funky backsplash tile along with Terra Domus Tile .

Music became our inspiration for the kitchen design. They put on several music festivals each summer which brings the entire community together — music runs through Wil Mar Neighborhood Center’s veins. Our entire color palette was inspired by vinyl records, and we even used actual records as decorations on the wall. One volunteer said the records were her favorite part since they listen to music while cooking!

On a chilly October 12th, the leadership team, board members, and guests were invited to see the unveiling of the center’s new spaces. Everyone was thrilled to see the transformation and excited by the new aesthetic. Bella Domicile is proud to continue our partnership with Floor360 and Design for a Difference. "All Homes Accessible, Comfortable and Safe." - vision for the Living in Place Institute Here at Bella Domicile, we are excited to announce that our Lead Sales Designer, Dondi Szombatfalvy, has recently earned her CLIPPTM certification from the Living in Place Institute .Though, if you’re like most people, you’re left thinking, Congratulations! That sounds great. But what on Earth is CLIPPTM?So we’ve put together an overview on what CLIPPTM certification is, how it pertains to kitchen and bath design, and how designing with Living in Place practices can benefit everyone. Living in Place and CLIPPTM Living in Place refers to the practice of making all homes accessible, comfortable and safe for everyone. Since we are not able to control who lives or enters any home or the future abilities or disabilities of any occupants, Living in Place is about improving the function and conditions of every home, regardless of who currently uses the space.CLIPPTM stands for Certified Living in Place Professional. These are professionals in the industry, from interior designers to appliance manufacturers, who have gone through rigorous coursework and a final exam to demonstrate their knowledge of the course material regarding Living in Place design practices. CLIPPTM is unique from other design programs in that it is not specifically about aging. All people, regardless of age or ability, can benefit from Living in Place design. CLIPPTM also encompasses the entire industry in its approach - what it calls a “total market” approach - as it regards everyone from contractors to medical professionals to product manufacturers as important pieces in the design process. CLIPPTM and Kitchen and Bath Design Dondi says she pursued CLIPPTM certification because “helping people to maintain their dignity and independence by staying in their home [is a] natural extension of what I do as a kitchen and bath designer”. She’s had clients incur injuries and even surgeries due to unsafe environments in their homes. The resulting financial and emotional costs are both significant and unnecessary. The majority of our daily activities in the home (besides sleeping) take place in the kitchen and bath. It’s no coincidence that 60% of all falls happen in the home, and often in these very spaces.Kitchen and bath spaces, which Bella Domicile specializes in, benefit in many ways from Living in Place design practices. Some of the areas Dondi looks at when designing a space include electrical accessibility and safety, lighting and color, the usability of faucets and appliances, the ease of use of cabinetry, entryways, and hallways and walkways. It’s worth noting that Living in Place benefits not only the occupants of the home, but also any visitors. How CLIPPTM Benefits Our Clients There are aspects of Living in Place design that Dondi and our other designers have been practicing for years. Some examples are:

Eliminating different heights in flooring
Providing recommendations for adequate lighting
Designing shower spaces with zero thresholds
Adding textured shower floors
Giving recommendations on appliances such as induction, side or center opening ovens, and drawer microwaves
Using low-glare surfaces, especially countertops

Living in Place design thinks through the use of appliances, electronics, and lighting. Designing in this way helps everyone move through their homes with ease. These design practices are intuitive and beautiful - and completely undetectable to the naked eye. Adding a textured tile floor provides a safe grip, a drawer microwave is accessible to everyone, and low glare surfaces help with food preparation. These aren’t overt safety mechanisms. Family-Friendly Home Office Design

The end of summer is here (we know, sorry) and that means a change in routine for many of us as the kids head back to school. By now you’ve probably received classroom supply lists, registered for extracurricular activities, and taken stock of your kid’s closets to determine what they’ve outgrown over the summer (the answer: everything).You may have planned outfits for the first day of school and pinned 30-minute or less meal ideas for those crazy evenings (or just put the local pizza place on speed dial), but have you thought about the daily after-school routine once everything really gets in full swing? Having a space where the kids and adults can do homework, catch up on emails, and decompress together at the end of a busy day can help to make the difference between frantic evenings and peaceful ones.Many homes today have a dedicated home office area for computers, books, and supplies. It makes sense to take stock of this area and see how it works for your family at your own personal stage of life. Is there space for everyone to sit? Is there enough storage? How accessible are the craft supplies? Below we’ve listed some ways to make your home office area family-friendly, especially during this transitional time of year. These tips can work even without a specific home office space - take a peek at your kitchen, dining, or living room space to see how these ideas can be incorporated into your own homework station, wherever that might be.

‍Technology

‍ By the time kids hit middle and high school, technology is a crucial tool for schoolwork. Having a space where everyone can work side-by-side is helpful. For one thing, it’s easier to help out and answer questions if everyone is together instead of separated in their own private bedrooms. A space where everyone can work out in the open is also important for internet safety, especially as teens spend more and more time on their computers.

Large Workspace

‍ A large, flat surface is crucial for working on large school projects or for families with multiple children. Think of the space that’s taken up by a single person when they have a textbook, a notebook or two, and a laptop all spread out before them. Add in a project with poster board and even a single child will take up several square feet of space. While individual desks can be nice, a smooth dining table is the perfect space for multiple people to spread out at once. Consider adding a large table in your own office area or somewhere else in your house. Bonus: it frees up the actual dining room table for, y’know, dinnertime.

Cubbies

‍ Just like cubbies work well in the mudroom to separate out whose shoes or winter hats are whose, creating small cubby-like areas in the home office can help keep everyone’s items separate and organized. It doesn’t have to be anything major: some simple wall shelving can help corral each kid’s papers, assignments, and special pens to keep them separate from their siblings. Even something as simple as a bookshelf with a separate shelf for each kid to store their textbooks, library books, and supplies can help everyone know where their own things are - and help to prevent fights.

Play Area

‍ Maybe you have young kids who aren’t in school yet but love to be around their older siblings. Or maybe you have kids who need to take a break during homework time. Having a few quiet toys or a small play area can help kids re-set their brains before diving back into their school work. Things like a chalkboard or white board where they can doodle, a playmat with some cars, a bin with blocks or LEGOs, or a shelf with some books or stuffed animals can help keep little ones occupied and provide a creative outlet for bigger ones.

Supply Storage

A dedicated supply area in a spot where kids can reach is crucial for homework time. Pens, pencils, markers, scissors, and other high-use materials can go on the desk top in their own containers. Other materials, like construction paper, glue, and other specialty art supplies can have their own dedicated art drawer. If you don’t have the space, or if your home office area is really just your dining room, try a rolling cart . It can be pulled out for homework time and just as easily rolled away to store in a nearby closet or against the wall when not in use.

Cabinet Hardware: the Jewelry of the Kitchen

Fashion magazines often discuss taking an outfit “from day to night” by swapping an outfit’s shoes and jewelry. Our design team often refers to cabinet hardware - the pulls and knobs adorning each door and drawer - as the “jewelry” of the kitchen. While cabinetry hardware isn’t so easily swapped out, the style of the hardware can make a space feel drastically different. Small though they may be, cabinet hardware is an accent to your space, and it can be as dramatic or as subtle as you want!Often one of the most difficult choices for our clients can be not over cabinetry style or finish, but what hardware to use! It’s a small detail, and one not often thought of in the initial vision of a space. But while it’s typically one of the last design choices made in a project, it’s also one that can have a big impact. Our Bella Domicile showroom has hundreds of hardware styles on display so we can show you exactly what it will look like on your style of cabinetry. Here’s a quick primer on some of the most current trends in hardware from our vendors. Brass Brass, is back in a big way - especially with a brushed (i.e. not shiny) finish. Gold tones are everywhere right now and this is especially true in cabinet hardware. Consider the rest of your space if you choose this bold, elegant finish; matching your faucet and/or lighting finishes to the hardware can make a space feel coordinated and have a big impact.See: These pulls . These knobs . These cup pulls . Black Bold neutrals, such as deep blacks and stark whites, are a very modern look. White cabinetry paired with bold, black, hardware makes a statement in a simple way. Mixed Metals Mixing metals used to be a big no-no in the design world. (Well, besides the shiny chrome and brass faucets from the 1980s, but that’s a whole other story.) Mixing metals is actually a great way to add texture and depth to a space. And it’s not just about the cabinet hardware: consider the finishes of appliances, faucets, and lighting as well. Texture is just as important as color when mixing metals. Polished chrome and brass might be a bit much (see: those faucets from the ‘80’s), but combining polished brass with brushed black is a sleek look. Another note when mixing metals: this look typically works best when you use one finish as the main color and another as an accent.See: These matte black and chrome pulls . Or combine these knobs and pulls with this faucet . Shapes and Textures Simple hardware in distinct shapes is a modern and functional look. Simple knobs in squares or octagons are bolder than their round counterparts. Textured finishes are great for adding depth to a space, too. The very first appointment for a potential design project can be the biggest and most thrilling step of the entire process — for both our designers and clients! There’s excitement in examining the very beginnings of a project, there’s nervousness as both the space and budgets are examined, and there are a lot of questions as the designer tries to nail down the client’s vision.Wait, vision? Isn’t that what your designer is for? What if you don’t know what you want for your space?We’ve got you covered. We’ve compiled a list of resources below of both popular design and social media sites that can actually assist with the design process. While your designer is there to help with logistics, technical concerns, project management, and, yes, material and color selection, they also need to learn your own style and preferences. After all, a “white kitchen” means two very different things when you’re talking about transitional vs. contemporary design styles!At Bella Domicile, more than anything, we want your design process to be a smooth and welcoming experience. We want you and your designer to speak the same language. One of the most helpful things a client can do is compile a gallery of images that speak to them for their new space. It doesn’t mean we’re going to make your kitchen a carbon copy of the one you saw in MagnoliaJournal, but it does help to give us a direction.If you’re not sure where to start looking for design inspiration, here are some of our favorite resources: Houzz This is the first place we send clients. Not only can you see Bella Domicile’s own Houzz page of completed projects, but the entire site is dedicated to professionals in the design world. Every high-quality photo represents a real project. Their search feature is also fantastic: you can search as broadly as “kitchen remodel” or as narrow as “kitchens with quartz countertops”. You can search for spaces with a certain color scheme or a specific type of tile. This feature is incredibly helpful in narrowing down everything from design style to materials to space plans.Houzz also has the ability to save favorite images to “ideabooks”. You can create different ideabooks for different projects or design styles - however it works best for you to organize your own project. You can share these ideabooks with your designer, too, which is especially helpful even before your first appointment! Pinterest Pinterest is a site that compiles images from across the Internet into a single site. Searching for a “gray bathroom” will return hundreds of photos from across the web, and clicking on the image will take you to its original source. Their search function is also wonderful and gives you suggestions for narrowing the scope of your search across the top of the page. One of Pinterest’s most helpful features is the ability to create “boards”. Similar to the ideabooks on Houzz, you can “pin” images that relate to your project all in one spot to refer back to later, and even share your board with your designer. (Psst...we also have our own page !)It’s worth noting that unlike Houzz, Pinterest returns images from all across the web, which means you can find everything from high-quality architectural images all the way to the blurry photo someone shared of their home remodel to their blog. Instagram As a photo-based platform, Instagram excels at giving visual stimulation. While their search feature isn’t as sophisticated as the ones on either Houzz or Pinterest, it’s still an excellent resource. The best way to utilize this as a resource is to follow accounts of designers with a similar aesthetic to yours or brands you might be interested in, such as Dura Supreme , Cambria , or Kohler . (Also our page is right here !) Apartment Therapy Don’t let the name fool you: this site is full of beautiful homes, both owned and rented. We recommend starting at the House Tours tab to gather inspiration. Dwell Similar to Apartment Therapy, it’s best to start in the Home Tours section. Unlike Apartment Therapy, however, they have separate tabs to peruse kitchens , baths , and renovations . Freshome This is another site that offers full home tours as well as room-specific galleries of kitchens and baths . Spring Organizing the Kitchen and Pantry

The first thing that pops into my head when I hear the phrase “spring cleaning” is of my mom wearing long, yellow rubber gloves, patiently wiping down the windows, the baseboards, and the floor. Maybe airing out the house as the weather finally warms up enough to open the windows again to let in fresh air and light. I think of dusting off every shelf, every cabinet, wiping down every surface to make it shiny and new.Except…cleaning isn’t exactly my thing. While some people take pride in making things shiny and new I’m happy to pay a cleaning service to come in occasionally and clean up the worst of the grime.But organization? Now that’s my jam. Maybe we could rebrand spring cleaning and call it spring organizing instead. I’m a rockstar at creating piles of things to “donate”, “keep”, and “save” and take immense pride in the resulting space that appears after removing piles of clutter. That’s exactly what I was made for.It also happens to be what our showroom coordinator, Tara Buedding, has been called to as well. Tara shared with me some of the biggest challenges her clients face, some organizational products and tips, and ways to stick with a system that works for you! Challenges One of the biggest obstacles Tara finds in her clients’ homes is simply having too much stuff. Overflowing cabinets, pantries, and drawers aren’t helpful to anyone. She finds that many of the people she works with own multiples of things, such as can openers or several jars of peanut butter. Paring back to what your household actually needs is one of the simplest ways to clear clutter quickly. Another challenge is a lack of proper storage and function: when a single cabinet is filled with everything from plates to spices to utensils, it’s hard to find anything. Steps to Tackling the Pantry

Tara’s first step to organizing any space is to take out everything. Take absolutely everything out of your pantry. It will look like your kitchen has exploded all over the dining table and island, but we promise it gets better!
The next step is to clean the space (yes, this is my least favorite part!). Wipe down every shelf and sweep the floor if necessary.
Return to all that stuff you pulled from the pantry and sort it into groups. Baking supplies in one group, breakfast cereals in another, serving platters in their own group, etc.
Go through each pile and throw away or recycle any expired/stale items. Create a donate pile for any kitchen items you have multiples of or just don’t use.
Put your items back in the pantry. It helps to create “zones” as you do this so in the future it’s easier to find things. For example, a baking zone for flours, sugars, and chocolate chips. A breakfast zone for cereal, oatmeal, pancake mix, and coffee. And another for kids’ snacks. Plastic baskets with handles are great for corralling items into their own zones – they can be taken out from the pantry easily and wiped out when needed.

Sticking With A System The biggest words of wisdom from Tara might be to practice, practice, practice! Once an organizational system is in place in your home, it takes time to make it a habit. It’s hard to train our brains in any new habit because first we have to break the old ones. This includes the way we function in our own homes – especially when we throw children or roommates into the mix! Yet sticking with an efficient system will save both time and money in the end. Time because you will no longer be searching for things in several different cabinets, and money because you won’t be replacing items just because you can’t find them. Product Recommendations

Madison Reading Project’s READ(y) to Wear Fashion Show 2019

On Saturday, February 9th, Bella Domicile was excited to participate in the Madison Reading Project’s READ(y) to Wear fashion show. The Madison Reading Project is a nonprofit that works to bring books and literacy programming to underserved children throughout south-central Wisconsin. Rowan Child, herself a mother of two, founded the Madison Reading Project in 2013 after becoming alarmed by the statistic that two-thirds of children living in poverty do not have books at home.Literacy is especially important in early childhood. According to the Madison Reading Project’s website, difficulties in reading are directly linked to early drop-out rates and unemployment. Those living in poverty are disproportionately affected by a lack of reading skills. Purchasing books is a privilege that low-income homes often do not have.The Madison Reading Project relies on donations to bring books to children in need. These books are then distributed to schools, homeless shelters, community centers, and other local organizations where families may visit. The more places that children have accessibility to book, the greater chance they have at improving their literacy skills and developing a passion for reading. The Madison Reading Project also hosts giveaway events throughout the year, which provide books for children to bring home, helping to put an end to the statistic that called Rowan Child to action.We at Bella Domicile have teamed up with the Madison Reading Project to help in their mission to improve the literacy of underprivileged children because we know that literacy is such an important foundation in life. Our goal is to partner up to bring the joy of reading to all children in our community. Our president, Dan Luck, and his wife Sally both love to read, as well as many of the Bella Domicile staff. The mission and values of the Madison Reading Project align so well with our own, which makes this an easy and important local nonprofit to support.The READ(y) to Wear fashion show is a “paper-inspired benefit fashion show”. Teams work to create a costume almost entirely out of paper and compete to earn awards from the panel of judges. The show raises money and awareness for Madison Reading Project’s operation costs and to continue its outreach programs. This year the fashion show raised $24,000!Bella Domicile competed this year by pulling our inspiration from Peter Pan. Over drinks one night, our design team sketched out our idea for the costume. We decided to modernize the idea of Peter Pan. The idea behind the outfit (so beautifully modeled by Dan!) was for it to be business on the outside (hence the suitcoat) while remaining a little boy on the inside (i.e. Peter Pan, once the suitcoat was removed). The girls’ outfits added to our theme, with one representing a Lost Boy and the other as Tinkerbell. The girl’s skirts were made using pages of old Peter Pan books and the cover was used to create Tinkerbell’s wings.It was a fun night to support a wonderful organization. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the Madison Reading Project throughout the year, by hosting their annual Thankful event and also by leading the United Madison television campaign for 2019. Cabinetry Isn't Just for the Kitchen - Powder Room

Many of our posts focus on how our beautiful cabinetry can be used in the kitchen. However, cabinetry can be so much more than a way to store cutlery, cereal boxes, and dish towels! Many of our clients love to add custom cabinetry to their spaces, especially in bathrooms. One of the spaces people don’t often think of using cabinetry is in the powder room.While bathrooms are a common spot to use cabinetry, one of the baths that can often be overlooked is the powder room. The powder room (a bathroom on the main level of the home without a tub or shower, intended for use by guests) sets the tone for your home just as much as the kitchen or living room, since it’s one of the few rooms guests may see. It’s also a place to have fun! Because the powder rooms are typically small, they’re great spaces to get creative with both storage and design. With a door that’s often closed they’re don’t have to be bound to any other room’s style, so you can experiment with something that could be scarier or cost-prohibitive to tackle in a larger space.

Basic sink/vanity

‍ Many powder rooms are large enough for standard-size vanity cabinetry. And since you don’t need much - even an 18-inch cabinet will do in a small space - the powder room vanity can coordinate with the cabinetry in the rest of the house. It’s also a great spot to experiment with sink design. The small footprint of most powder baths make it a perfect spot for a vessel sink , which aren’t always practical for high-use bathroom areas. Or try a custom-poured solid surface sink (such as Corian). These are both beautiful and practical in their ease of cleaning.

Custom vanity

‍ If you’re looking beyond a basic vanity, the powder bath is the place to experiment with a custom vanity setup. Whether an open series of shelving or just a few legs to support the countertop, the small footprint of a powder bath makes this a cost-effective area to try something customized to your space.

Shelving

A powder bath typically doesn’t need much for storage, but it is nice to have a spot to store extra hand towels, toilet paper, and even small decor elements. This could be as simple as a floating shelf or a more elaborate wall unit.

‍Paneling/Wainscoting

‍ Another way to liven up the space is to play with the walls. Adding custom paneling (on the entire wall) or wainscoting (paneling on part of the wall) is a great way to do this to coordinate with the rest of the space and home. Wall panels can be made to either coordinate or contrast with the cabinetry in the room. Wall paneling can also set the mood for your home; darker paneling gives the space a more sophisticated feel while white sets a lighter, brighter tone.

‍Beyond cabinetry

‍ Besides any cabinetry in the space, the powder room is the spot to really go big in your home. It’s small size means the expensive tile you’ve been eyeing may actually be affordable, and not overly expensive like it could be in a much larger space. Another fun choice for the powder room is wallpaper . Transitional Design

At the most basic level, transitional design is a marriage of contemporary and traditional design styles. Good transitional designs are a happy marriage that flawlessly blend classic elements with new ones, meshing two design styles in a single space to create a cohesive design.

Transitional design was the reaction against the stark contemporary and mid-century modern styles that emerged in the middle of the 20th century. It allowed designers and homeowners to combine modern elements with traditional features to suit their own individual tastes. Because it combines current design trends with classic ones, transitional design is a style that shifts and transitions with current trends and culture.Chances are good that many of the spaces you like feature a transitional design style. Since it blends both the new and the old, it has something that appeals to everyone. Because it borrows from these other design styles, it can sometimes be difficult for the untrained eye to peg down a transitional space. Doesn’t raised panel cabinetry automatically indicate a traditional style? Or modern glass tiles make it a modern design? Not necessarily. Outlined below are some of the features of the transitional design style.

Tone on tone palette

‍ A transitional design tends to feature neutral or monochromatic color palettes. Think grays, creams, taupes, and espresso. Or layers of one color like navy combined with robin’s egg blue, and cream. Traditional patterns While pattern isn’t outlawed in transitional design, it’s also not going to take over the whole room. Traditional stripes, damask, quatrefoil, or animal print patterns in the same tone on tone palette help add dimension to the space.

Mix of cabinetry styles

‍ One of the most popular ways for our clients to incorporate a transitional style in their own spaces is to mix cabinetry styles. The kitchen may feature a door style with raised panels on the base cabinets, and flat panels on the upper cabinets. Or have the perimeter done in one style with the island done in another. This is a fun way to mix new and old, and is a contemporary way to blend different styles.

‍Minimal accents

‍ Clean lines and toned-down the accessories help a traditional space lean more contemporary. Keep accessories and decorations to a minimum - no curio cabinets here. Streamlined spaces define this style. Traditional elements you won’t see here are elaborate millwork or carvings.

Blend of masculine and feminine details

‍ Curved lines, plush fabrics, and bright colors, considered more feminine touches, combined with the stark lines and rich colors of more masculine styles, are a hallmark trait of transitional-style spaces.Transitional design is one of the easiest styles to implement in your existing spaces. If your kitchen cabinets are already paneled and colored with a heavy, traditional stain, try updating your countertops and backsplash tile to something lighter, reflective, and more contemporary. For a space that already veers toward the stark colors, straight lines, and hard surfaces of contemporary design, try layering in more traditional elements such as warm wood tones and upholstered furniture. Industrial Farmhouse Style

While HGTV’s hit show Fixer Upper may have ended its run, the legacy it has left on our contemporary design aesthetic is far from over.

Enter Industrial Farmhouse design: full of natural materials, neutral colors, and all the shiplap you can handle! The Industrial Farmhouse style has been around for awhile, and can find its roots in the renovation and re-use of urban spaces. Cities like Minneapolis, Chicago, and, yes, Madison, have been repurposing buildings for the better part of two decades, turning former office spaces and factories into everything from restaurants to apartment complexes. Industrial Farmhouse design takes its cues from the bones of existing spaces. Think unfinished brick walls, exposed ductwork, and unfinished wood floors. Nothing too covered up or hidden; it becomes part of the character of the space and is there for all to see. This style has crossed over into our homes, too, aided largely by the popularity of Chip and Joanna Gaines. It’s a style that can suit both renovations and new construction. Here are some elements of an Industrial Farmhouse design.

Unfinished materials and surfaces.

Think materials like exposed brick, stone, cement, wood, and ductwork.

Open spaces.

This style thrives on light and airiness. In a kitchen this could take on the look of open shelving and open sight lines to the dining area or living room.

The popular colors of the moment fit in well here: whites, creams, grays, blacks, and navy.

A neutral color palette.

Minimal pattern.

Fabrics or wallpaper typically have little to no pattern to them. Subtle stripes or plaids are about as bold as it gets. Look for furniture with linen or leather upholstery.

Metal.

Metal gives that industrial look and can be incorporated in many different ways, in everything from chairs to tables to countertops to appliances.

Exposed bulbs.

Look for bold, dramatic fixtures that emphasize the light source, often combined with dark metal.

While companies like Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware offer new furniture pieces made to look old, try looking at your local salvage yard, consignment shop, or Habitat for Humanity ReStore to find materials and pieces that actually are old to give your space some character.

Old anything.

Simplicity.

Avoid excess furniture and accessories. This style is clean, simple, and unadorned.

Combination of materials.

Think painted walls covered with shiplap and furniture constructed with both wood and metal.Even if an entire house or even room done in this style isn’t your favorite, it’s a great base to add other design elements. Layer in some mid century modern furniture pieces for a contemporary vibe, throw the color and pattern rules out the window and go nuts with bold pillows and curtains, or layer in some feminine touches like florals or an oversized chandelier. Spring Cleaning your Kitchen and Bath

Though it hasn’t looked like it around here lately, it’s officially spring! A new season is a great chance to clean up, clear out, and refresh your home, especially after a long winter. Use these ideas below to tackle your kitchen and bathrooms as we welcome back the sunshine and say good-bye to the cold.

First, set a goal. How much time do you realistically have? Does your home truly need a deep-clean or do you want to tackle clutter? Both? Set your goals so you’re not distracted by an overstuffed closet while you’re trying to clean out the refrigerator. Tasks are split into clutter and cleaning below. It’s helpful to focus on one category at a time. And if you choose to do both, we recommend the going after clutter first — you’ll have less to clean later!

Tips for Kitchen Clutter

Ask yourself some questions. How many of these do I have? How many do I need? Which one do I usually reach for? Is it easy to clean/maintain? Have I used it recently, or at all? Is this expired? Do we regularly eat this food?
Get rid of anything that’s redundant. Most people do not need three rolling pins or five colanders. Clear out the extras to make some space.
Donate or sell small appliances you use infrequently or not at all. The panini press that was a wedding present eight years ago, the pour-over coffee maker that just isn’t as convenient as your regular automatic drip machine.
Is there anything you actually need? Another cutting board, kitchen tongs, or a toaster upgrade? As you clear out old or unused items, it might be a good time to add these new ones.
Toss any expired or stale items in the pantry and spice cabinet.
Use up any items that are close to expiration or you’ve had for awhile.
For pantry organization, invest in large plastic bins to store like items. Consider corralling all baking items (flour, sugar, etc.) in one bin, fruit and loose produce in another, and individual snack items in their own spot.
Toss any old papers hanging on your refrigerator or hanging out on the counter.

Tips for Kitchen Cleaning

Most countertops don’t require much more than water, a soft cloth, and elbow grease to wipe clean. If you’d like more sanitizing power, any mild all-purpose cleaner will work well. Or add a few drops of lemon essential oil to the water for a fresh, clean scent.
Clean out your refrigerator and freezer. Remove all items from the shelves and wipe down each shelf with a soft cloth and soapy water. Remove drawers and rinse those out as well.
Wipe down cabinets with either a store-bought cleaner specific to wood cabinetry or make your own with a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water. Wipe down with a soft cloth or sponge and dry thoroughly. If the cabinets have built-up stains or lots of detail, a toothbrush dipped in the same solution can help remove the grime.
You can try using the self-cleaning function if your oven offers one or doesn’t have much build-up, though we prefer this method from The Kitchn for tougher jobs. Most cooktops can also be cleaned using a similar combination of water, vinegar, and baking soda.

Tips for Bathroom Clutter

Just like with the kitchen, ask yourself some questions. Which of these products/items do I truly use? Are there any duplicates I can get rid of? Which products do I use most frequently? Are they easily accessible?
Find a spot to store multiples of items, such as a storage bin in the linen closet for new bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and packs of toothbrushes. Only leave out what you need to use each day.
Toss any items that are expired, dried out, or just not worth using. Think bottles of old nail polish, mascara, and travel-sized bottles that are mostly used up.
Are there any items you would like to replace? A new makeup brush, rug, or bathroom towels? Get them! Freshen up your space.
Organization is key for the little items that can take over a bathroom. Use small bins to corral bottles and bobby pins in drawers. A toothbrush stand on the counter works just as well for holding makeup brushes. And a makeup pouch filled only with the items you use everyday makes finding those things easy.

Tips for Bathroom Cleaning

Just like in the kitchen, a soft cloth, water, and some effort could be all it takes to wipe the countertops down. If you have more stubborn stains, make a paste with baking soda and water and let sit for a minute before wiping down.
Wipe down the shower walls. Use a store-bought solution targeted at mildew. If you have a tiled shower, use a toothbrush or other scrub brush to clean the grout and corners.
When cleaning the bathtub, work from the top down. Wipe down the walls with the mildew cleaner and work downward. Wipe out the tub with the cleaner as well, focusing around the drain and faucet. A tub ring or other stubborn stains can be tackled with a paste of baking soda and a scrub brush.
If your toilet has stains, dump a cup of baking soda in and let sit for a few minutes before flushing. If stains are still apparent, try a pumice stone or scrub brush. Then clean as usual with toilet cleaner and toilet brush.

So What Is KBIS?

If you follow Bella Domicile on Facebook or Instagram , you’ll know we recently attended KBIS (pronounced “k-biz” to those in the industry). KBIS stands for the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show. It is the only trade event and conference in the kitchen and bath industry to focus exclusively on all things related to residential kitchen and bath design. Three of our staff members attended the show in Orlando: Abbey Weiss , our Director of Operations, Dondi Szombatfalvy , our Lead Designer, and our President, Dan Luck , who was also honored to speak at the Voices from the Industry conference series. Not only were they glad to escape the snow for a few days in mid-January, but they enjoyed exploring new products, learning about new technologies, and connecting with other designers.

Attending KBIS is important to us at Bella Domicile because it’s the only event where we are given unparalleled access to the latest trends, designs, and technologies — all in one location. In short, it’s the biggest and best way for us to connect with our industry. We’re able to interact with displays from over 2000 vendors, which gets us just a little bit giddy. (That whole saying about “kids in a candy store”? That’s us attending KBIS.) We love the chance to get hands-on with products just as clients love interacting with our displays in our own Madison showroom.

KBIS allows us to meet with a wide variety of vendors face-to-face from all across the world. We learn from the brands themselves just how their products are installed and function. We see how they can improve the health, wellness, and sustainability of our own clients and homes. Being able to touch, control, compare, and interact with products right at our fingertips gives us a better understanding of their real-life applications. Seeing photos of a product on a screen just can’t compare to interacting with them in real life. We discover new technologies and color and material trends at KBIS each year that make their way into real-life projects right here for our very own clients. It’s exciting to see a product we’ve interacted with in a display make its way into a client’s project.

We also have the opportunity to meet with other designers and showroom representatives from across the country. We gain valuable experience through these conversations and learn what’s trending in their areas, their favorite products, what’s important to their clients, and more. It’s exciting to compare notes and hear about what the kitchen and bath industry is up to in other parts of the country. Building relationships with other professionals and benefitting from their knowledge and ideas is one of our favorite parts of the show!

Appealing to Generation Y Home Buyers

When putting your home on the market, appealing to potential buyers - any buyers - is of utmost importance. Presenting your home in a way that shows it has been well-cared for and updated over the years are things that anyone walking through will notice. Fresh paint, new countertops, or updated flooring are things a buyer of any age can appreciate. There are, however, things that can be done to appeal to a younger generation in particular, those in Generation Y (aka Millennials).

According to Consumer Reports, Generation Y now comprises the largest group of homebuyers. For many of them, it’s their first experience with buying a home. Appealing to their tastes and sensibilities may mean you are able to sell your house more quickly and at the price you want.

The most important space in the home for any buyer is the kitchen. It truly is the heart of the home, and as such it can make or break a potential sale. Generation Y has come to expect certain amenities in this space: stone countertops, stainless or dark-colored

appliances, and an open floor plan to other areas of the home. With a younger generation also come expectations in a different area: technology. There is value placed on “smart” kitchens now, as 2 out of 3 Millennials believe that “smart home” technology is a good investment.

This doesn’t necessarily mean putting in refrigerators that know their own contents or the ability to control appliances with voice commands. A simple way to update the technology side of your kitchen is through adding charging stations. Between phones, tablets, computers, etc. having a dedicated spot for charging these devices is almost a necessity. This could be a special charging drawer or even an installation in the countertop itself. Which ties into another great feature for “smart” kitchens: specialized storage spaces. Built-in spice racks, pull-out storage for pots and pans, and creative corner solutions are all simple and fairly inexpensive ways to improve an existing space.

The term contemporary can seem like a buzzword thrown around these days, especially in the design world. Contemporary? What does that even mean? Is it any different from modern? And how does it differ from traditional design? It may seem like the term “contemporary” to describe design styles has been around for a while, because, well, it has. Contemporary design is ever-changing, encompassing the trends of the moment.Contemporary and modern are terms that can often seem interchangeable; the words have such similar meanings! However in terms of design styles, modern refers to a very specific time period - roughly the 1920s-1960s - think those mid-century modern furniture pieces I mentioned above. Modern design is its own defined style, and has what we may think of as a “retro” feel.While contemporary kitchen cabinetry design continues to evolve and change, there are some trends that define contemporary design today. As you collect images of favorite kitchens and baths, you may run across these elements, and find that you love these aspects of contemporary design.

Mix of natural materials

A popular look right now is to mix different, natural materials: think neutral wood tones matched with dark metal and cream-colored tile. These materials achieve a layered look and can feel chic and classic while also being contemporary.

Traditional materials used unexpectedly.

Think concrete countertops, oversized backsplash tiles, or whitewashed wood flooring.

Clean lines.

Most contemporary looks today will incorporate linear, clean, crisp lines. There is little decorative ornamentation and most cabinetry will incorporate a flat slab or shaker-style door panel free of carving.

Updated appliances and accessories.

What is Traditional Kitchen Cabinetry?

With so many different design styles, it can be hard to narrow your preferences down to one, or even to differentiate between them. What draws you to these cabinets over those ones? Why does the style of that kitchen call out to you but another ones don't? Is it just the color you admire, or something more? At Bella Domicile, our designers often suggest that clients come prepared with images of spaces they love to help sort through a client’s likes and dislikes for their kitchen remodel.

Traditional design is a style that continues to be one of our most popular. A traditional kitchen style isn’t confined to any one time period, color, or even type of materials.

Traditional design is actually much more fluid than many people think, and borrows its style cues from several centuries of design practices. While it can feel imposing, traditional design can be both comfortable and elegant. But what exactly makes traditional style, well, traditional?

There are some design elements that help place a space firmly within the parameters of traditional design. That’s not to say these things won’t be found in other styles, but if you come across many of these together in your own favorite images, chances are you’ve come to love a design that is traditional.

Raised panel doors.

Raised panels - where the panel in the center of a door projects forward instead of laying flat - is a key element in traditional design. Raised panels have a more ornate feel to them, and are a key differentiation between traditional style and the slab, flat panels of contemporary design.

Antiqued metal hardware.

Additionally, the drawer pulls and door hardware tend to have an antiqued or hammered finish. Handles with lots of detail add more dimension to the cabinets themselves. Instead of square and linear lines, traditional hardware has more curvature and variation.

Decorative corbels and moldings.

In a traditional kitchen, more is more is more. The cabinetry features such design details as corbels, turned post, stacked moldings, and even carvings to add more detail and definition. These architectural details are layered on to add a truly custom feel to any traditional kitchen space.

Furniture-style cabinets.

Large, furniture-type pieces, such as hutches and tall pantry cabinets, often take center-stage in a traditional kitchen. When layered with the decorative details described above, they add the feel of furniture with an extra opportunity for decoration, as well as provide precious storage space.

Stainless or wood paneled appliances.

Stainless steel is a timeless finish for appliances that coordinates with just about everything and won’t be going out of style anytime soon. For an extra “finished” look, many traditional kitchens will opt to panel appliances with wood panels, stained and finished in the same style as the cabinetry, for a custom, built-in look.

Neutral colors.

Rich wood stains and cream tones are typically found in traditional kitchens. Other neutrals, such as black, gray, and navy will often be used, but bright color palettes are completely out of place. Additionally, the addition of distressed and antiqued finishes to the cabinetry add an extra layer of finish to a basic paint or stain.

Ornate tile work.

Tile, usually in light, traditional stone such as marble or travertine, is often set in elaborate patterns to create a backsplash or dramatic floor design. Think of patterns in basket weave, herringbone, and rosettes. Another way to incorporate interesting tile work is to add a tiled niche or ledge into the backsplash.

Even if traditional design isn’t your particular brand of style, these elements can be used in other ways to create your own, personal kitchen design. Mix in a raised-panel door with a more contemporary design for a transitional look. Use rich, neutral tones with a more modern cabinetry style, then spice it up with pops of color. Or tile a ledge in your own backsplash, to gain function regardless of your personal design preferences. These are ways to add in traditional design features without compromising your own design style.

Bella Domicile Participates in Local Charity Makeover

In 2016, we were excited to partner with Design for a Difference Madison to assist a local nonprofit called The Rainbow Project. Design for a Difference was founded by the International Design Guild as the first ever community-driven design movement that brings together local showrooms, designers, and businesses to makeover much needed spaces for local charities. Bella Domicile worked with the head of the Madison chapter, Floor 360 , along with 33 other designers, 29 students from UW-Madison, and over 200 local business to tackle the space for The Rainbow Project.

Last year’s recipient, The Rainbow Project , is a child and family counseling and resource clinic for families with young children. These families have all experienced some form of trauma, whether child abuse, community violence, or exposure to serious accidents and natural disasters. The Rainbow Project recently celebrated their 36th anniversary and has helped over 10,800 children in that time.

The 12-room makeover project was completed over a nine day period and over 200 people were involved in the process. Each of the rooms had a team that was in charge of its design and completion. Bella Domicile took over two rooms as a part of the remodel, which involved a lot of prep work before the construction even began: ensuring that materials were ordered and on-site, lining up laborers from painters to carpenters, and creating a strict timeline of what was going to happen on what day and at what time.

We are in the early phases of this year’s project, and we are in need of donations! Both financial and material resources are needed to help complete this year’s project and give Centro Hispano a beautiful space in which to do their important work. This year, we are excited to partner again with Design for a Difference Madison! The recipient for 2017 is Centro Hispano of Dane County . Centro Hispano was founded in 1983 as a way to meet the immediate needs of Cuban refugees recently settled in Madison. As the Latino community in Madison has continued to grow and diversify, so have Centro Hispano’s role and services. In 2006 they became the owner of an 18,000 square foot building on Madison’s south side. They currently provide a variety of programs to 2500 families each year in the Madison area.

Trends in Kitchen Design and Remodeling

Though we’re not quite halfway through the calendar year, some trends in kitchen design and remodeling have already emerged for 2017. These trends are all about personalizing the kitchen space for your individual family, lifestyle, and personality. The two main areas where we see trends emerging are in kitchen cabinetry color and technology use in the kitchen. The color trend continues to evolve from previous years, as advances in cabinet manufacturing techniques continue to evolve and improve. Other advances, in the area of appliance technology, seem to spring to life overnight, as new gadgets appear in showrooms and on the market that help the home cook both manage the kitchen and innovate how to get dinner on the table.

Color

Just like the “basic black dress” that is touted by fashion magazines, kitchen cabinetry colors have been tending towards basic neutrals. Black, gray, and even navy blue have all been fashionable cabinet choices this year, edging away from the white paint and deep wood tones of previous years. These are basic neutrals that are rich in color yet will be on-trend for years to come. Just as these colors are neutral building blocks in a wardrobe, they are neutral anchors in kitchen cabinetry.On the opposite end of the spectrum, using color to accent cabinets is another way to personalize the kitchen. These can be brighter pops of color, such as red, blue, or green to liven up a kitchen remodel. Using the island space as a spot for these color accents is a popular choice.

Technology

Some advances in the technology sector of kitchen design are improvements over old designs. Induction cooktops are relatively new and give many of the benefits of cooking with gas without the need to run a gas line if you already have electricity - an especially important consideration in a kitchen remodel! A smaller induction cooktop is something that can be added to a kitchen to add a different type or more cooking space, even if there is a standard cooktop already installed. The Galley workstation is another improvement to an old design. The pieces it utilizes are nothing new: bowls, cutting boards, a sink, etc., yet it incorporates all of these elements into an entirely new, useful, and completely revolutionary design. Adding The Galley to a kitchen remodel can completely change the way the space is used, even if the layout of the space remains otherwise virtually unchanged.Other technological advances are more futuristic. We’re seeing people use Echo , the smart-speaker from Amazon, as a way to control lights and sound, or even create shopping lists on command in their kitchen. Other kitchen appliances are now enabled with Wi-Fi. An appliance with Wi-Fi connectivity has the advantage of being able to accept software updates over the Internet, which requires less frequent updating of the physical appliance as the software updates itself automatically.

100 Year Old Home Is Transformed

Having lived in their home for 15 years, the owners of this 100 year old home were in need of a kitchen remodel. With a sink base cabinet and an old Hoosier built-in serving as the only storage for the entire kitchen, accessible and functional storage were significantly lacking.

The range wall acts as the focal wall for the kitchen—the appliances gleam against a brick backdrop and are intensified by the clean, white cabinetry. Adding to the focal point are the glass doors on the upper stacked cabinets, which provide a space to showcase and display decorative pieces. In order to create this focal wall, the kitchen designer suggested that the door leading to the basement be relocated.
Per clients’ request, the small run of stairs joining with the main staircase and living room are kept in place; allowing the clients, their kids, and even the family dog to sit on the landing and oversee the kitchen activities. By placing the wall cabinets on the range wall slightly higher, we were able to achieve an unobstructed view all the way through to the dining room.
Adding to the range wall’s interest is the repurposed antique chopping block. By removing the table’s existing legs, the chunky block was set atop a drawer unit. Careful measurements were taken in order to assure equal surface height on either side of the range.
Using the sides and back of the refrigerator, a faux wall was constructed. To the left of this faux wall is the microwave and great pantry storage.
The sink wall was visually lengthened by running kitchen cabinetry past the wall and wrapping the cabinets back towards the dining room. Counter space was created for buffet-style entertaining, convenient to both the prep and dining areas.

The new design of the kitchen caters to the clients’ modern lifestyle while complementing the vintage aesthetic found in the remainder of the home.

A Modern Update

The homeowner of this project wanted to refresh her kitchen with a modern look. The layout worked great for her space and way of cooking, but it needed to be updated with new kitchen cabinetry, appliances, backsplash tile and lighting.

To create a more modern look, Carly and the client, chose a painted white craftsman panel door style with brushed nickel hardware and stainless steel appliances. The backsplash tile on the range wall is Ann Sacks Selvaggio Mosaics Honed Athens in a vertical application. To keep with the minimalist look the countertops are Cambria in White Cliff . This modern kitchen update is simple and stunning.

Bella Domicile on Television

Once a month our showroom turns into the set for the filming of "Girl Talk", a locally produced television show. So what is "Girl Talk?" and why are we a part of it?"Girl Talk" consists of a successful and highly respected “cast” of women (and men!) who are influential in our community. CW57 has partnered with local established businesses (like ours) to provide helpful & informative show content while they educate viewers on their products and services unique in their industries. The set-up of “Girl Talk” has been described & compared to a Local or Regional version of “The View” or “The Talk”. “Girl Talk” is a 30-Minute Television Show produced and aired by CW57 Television (found on cable channel 2). The hosts of the show are Jessa Jeremiah, Elyse Edwards, Janet Cresson and Kjersten Goggin who are women who live and work in our community. Aside from Jessa, the hosts have other careers in the community – chances are, you may recognize them apart from the show!At Bella Domicile, it is important to us that we educate our clients on kitchen and bath design so they understand the process and what good design is. We started our partnership with "Girl Talk" so we could extend our help beyond our walls.

It's exciting to meet new faces in the community and learn something new every show. Last month I learned what it's like attending Brewmaster schooling from Ashley Kinart with Capital Brewery and how The Froth House makes a perfect Chia Latte. So check out "Girl Talk" weekly on the CW57.

Bathroom Retreat

Dondi and Cushman Construction took home the NARI CotY Award for First Place Residential Bathroom $50,001 to $75,000.

The homeowners of this project were looking to have a better functioning space in their master bathroom along with an updated look. Their specific needs included: Remove whirlpool tub that was not being used Better function and storage in the vanity area Increase closet storage Expand the shower size with custom sprays desired Address interference of linen closet and the existing bath door In-floor heat desired Stay within existing bath and closet footprint Update aesthetics

With the tub removed the vanity and toilet were placed on the same wall. This allowed for the additional storage desired and provided some privacy for the toilet area. Tile and wood accents were added to create a visually stunning vanity wall and mirror area.

To increase the shower and closet area the toilet room and linen closet were removed and the existing bath door was relocated. The addition of a linen cabinet recessed into the wall provided additional storage and created a dramatic entry into the closet area. Custom cabinetry was used to maximize storage and function of the closet. The custom constructed shower was built with recesses and accessory hooks, custom glass door and side panels, and multiple plumbing fixtures. The glass shower door and side panels give the space a more open feel and show off the tile design and pattern.
